Between the lines

The Wiener Werkstätte was founded in 1903 as part of a movement to revise artistic concepts in the field of applied arts. A collective of artists around co-founder Gustav Klimt set themselves the goal of producing furniture, jewellery and everyday objects of striking simplicity. Since the end of the Wiener Werkstätte, the philosophy has lived on with the Österreichischen Werkstätten, whose products can be admired at its store on Kärntner Strasse.
It’s hardly surprising that the home of the waltz is also renowned for its lavish balls – more than 450 take place in Vienna every year. The legendary highlight of the ball season is the Opera Ball, the glittering annual catwalk for celebrities from all over the world.
For around 250 years, the Burgtheater has been an institution in Vienna, and in 2014-15 was named the best theatre in German-speaking Europe. As well as the Burgtheater with its four venues, other stars in the Viennese theatrical firmament include the Theater in der Josefstadt, the Kammerspiele and the Volkstheater, as well as small companies specialising in contemporary drama.
The Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera venues in the world. More than 35 operas have been premiered there, while countless others have been restaged.
Vienna’s twin museums on Maria-Theresien-Platz: the Kunsthistorisches Museum, with its world-renowned art collection, and the natural history exhibits at the Naturhistorisches Museum. A must for every museum lover on a Vienna trip.
