The Austrian Ecolabel

The Capri – Certified Environmentally Friendly Since 2005

Österreichisches Umweltzeichen, Green HotelWe’re proud to be one of the pioneering tourism enterprises in Austria for whom ecologically sound economic management has become a matter of course: environmental friendliness and sustainability are essential and indispensable components of our corporate culture. As early as 2005, we were able to successfully fulfil the stringent requirements of the Austrian Ecolabel and were awarded the certificate for the first time.

Since then we’ve passed subsequent reviews every 4 (+1) years, and we’ve now been an “Ecolabel hotel” for almost 15 years. The Austrian Ecolabel for The Capri: Progression 2005-2019

Our ratings in the evaluations speak for themselves: in 2014, we reached 75 points, compared to the required 40, and in 2019 we were able to improve our rating to 96.5 points. In other words, we over-fulfilled the minimum requirement by a remarkable 241 %!

Environmentally friendly quality

Certification with the Austrian Ecolabel covers all aspects of a tourism business: rooms and furnishings, the selection of food and beverages, cleaning and the choice of cleaning agents, purchasing and accessibility options. The embedding of an environmental consciousness in the company also plays an important role, and to this end, a sustainability concept needs to be presented. Special emphasis is placed on a holistic evaluation: economic and social as well as ecological measures should be part of the concept.

Sustainability criteria

In order to attain the Austrian Ecolabel, we have to fulfil extensive sustainability criteria. These include:

  • Efficient use of energy
Our building is completely thermally insulated, and our innovative air-to-air heat pump heats, cools and prepares hot water. Thanks to it we’ve achieved 100 % CO2 savings as well as a total energy saving of 25 % – including cooling. By switching to LED lighting, we’ve been able to reduce our required wattage by 73 %, and in addition we use energy-saving light switches. The refrigerators of our minibars are also very energy-efficient models.
  • Resource-efficient water consumption
All of our rooms are equipped with water-saving taps and toilet cisterns.
  • Use of regional, seasonal and organic food
85 % of our ingredients come from the surrounding region – many of them are organically produced and some certified. We take care to support small producers, many of whom work according to organic criteria but are unable to afford a costly organic certification. When it comes to coffee and tea, we choose suppliers who pay close attention to fair production conditions.
  • Avoidance of disposable toiletry products
Our soap and shampoo are eco-certified and come in refillable dispensers, and our toothbrush mugs are made of environmentally friendly bamboo. We’re also prudent with our toiletries, and focus on the actual requirements of our guests.
  • Accessibility options
The Capri’s location couldn’t be better – right next to Nestroyplatz U-Bahn station and within easy walking distance of Praterstern regional train station. From there, our guests have a direct train connection to Vienna Airport. The bike path outside the front door leads directly to the Danube Cycle Path and to the sightseeing route along the Ringstrasse. Our guests’ bikes can be parked in our safe, convenient garage – free of charge, of course.

About the Austrian Ecolabel

The Austrian Ecolabel is the most well-known Austrian seal of quality for environmentally friendly goods and services. The certificate is awarded by the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism in the categories products, tourism, green meetings and education.

The label’s high recognition value is also due to its distinctive logo, designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which symbolically represents the elements earth, water, nature and air.

Companies can volunteer to have their products and services certified. The Ecolabel is awarded for four years at a time, after which a further audit and certification within one year is required.
